Chief, like other Native Americans born into poverty and hardship, was raised in an environment of abuse and neglect. Dealing with the challenges of that environment led to a convergence of circumstances that resulted in the tragic death of a women, and the persecution of a young man innocent of the crime for which he has served over 40 years in prison. The Davis Vanguard newspaper published an excellent article with background information about Chief and the current litigation attempting to free him from unlawful imprisonment.
Currently pending in the Court of Appeal of the State of California is a Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus, which those who believe in Chief's innocence are certain will set the record straight on how a man, innocent of the crime of murder, spent over four decades in prison, most of that on death row. The lies told, improper actions taken by law enforcement officials, the rush to hold someone accountable for a tragic death and the ability to take advantage of a young man, ignorant of the law enforcement and judical system, led to a horrible miscarriage of justice. The article referenced above points out some of the flaws in the prosecution's case, but a reading of the Petition for Writ Habeas Corpus and the thorough examination of all the evidence and law cited therein will clearly illustrate the injustices perpretrated here.
